What to Say and Wear on a First Date

So you’ve conquered the first hurdle and finally asked her out. Should you take her to a fancy restaurant with the best dining deals to impress her with good food? Or maybe a trip to Singapore so that you can have an adventure in the famous Universal Studios? No, that’s too much for a first date. Where you’ll be going is not extremely important because what will matter the most are your clothes and your words.

What to wear

First impressions do not always last, but they are essential. Sure, you feel comfortable with your ripped jeans and mustache, but it is not a good idea to wear them if you’re dating a girl for the first time. The way you dress will give your date a hint if you’re taking her seriously.

Go for well-fitting clothes

Your date will not know the price tag of your clothes, but she will notice how well or worse they fit on you. You don’t want her to be bothered by your baggy outfit or skin-tight get up. Casual button-down shirts, slim fit tops, and straight jeans that have the perfect fit are great options.

Pay bigger attention to small details

Don’t ignore the little things that can get noticed. Check your shirt buttons, iron out wrinkles and creases, remove lint, and make sure your shoes are clean and polished.

Match your outfit to your dating place

Always consider the location when choosing your clothes. Dinner dates might require you to wear a suit while casual dates, especially when done outdoors, would need a more relaxed outfit.

Wear the perfect underwear

You should feel good inside and out. Wear quality and neutral underwear that fit comfortably, so you do not have to adjust yourself secretly. First dates are precious, and you must avoid any distractions.

What to say (and what not to)

date

The awkward silences and fading conversations are one of the most challenging parts of first dates. As much as you want to keep the conversation going, you should not talk about just any topic that comes to your mind. Remember these tips when you are on a first date.

Ask questions that show interest, but not too personal

Show her that you want to know her more by asking questions about her passion, talents, her activities on a typical Saturday, and her favorite places.

Avoid the number game.

You are curious about your date, and you might be too excited to know the number of her exes, number of years or months that she has been single, and the number of dates she had gone to recently. But these are not proper questions to ask someone you’re dating for the first time.

Don’t mention your ex

Talking about your ex might prompt your date to think that you haven’t gotten over your past yet, and you are not ready for a new relationship.

Don’t talk about negative topics

Feelings are contagious. You will be likely to upset your date if you tell her about your bad day at work or complain about a horrible boss.

Say thank you

Be a gentleman and tell her that you appreciate her time and enjoyed her company.

Going on a first date is usually a nerve-racking experience, but wearing the right clothes and saying the right words will ease your nerves.
